Check for updates on non-blogs too

I presume you know how the blog update alert emails work. Blogs are most often set to ping the servers of sites like Weblog each time they are updated. This happens with their RSS feeds that is available on most blogs.

But, how about websites that are not blogs? Like, how about websites that do not RSS feeds? How can you check for updates from these websites.
