Well, even as the trial was on, Americans wanted to hang Saddam. But a defiant Saddam preferred to be shot by a firing squad.

Now, there was this utter confusion: whether to shoot him or hang him. So, it was finally decided to tread the middle path. Therefore, while he was hanged as per the wish of the Americans, he was shot (with a camera, of course) as per his own wish.

The only thing we missed here is the firing squad. But that's okay..
